Recession Risk Looms
Inflation has significantly declined since the 2022 CPI peak of 9.0%, but the current level of 3.0% is above the Fed’s 2.0% inflation target. The risk is that additional disinflation may occur by year-end and into 2025 and, therefore, monetary policy will be too tight as real rates rise. We believe that the likelihood of a recession, stemming from the rapid rate hikes, has been delayed but not derailed, as monetary policy works with a lag.
